Free attractions in Mauritius Island

Last year, we went on a family holiday to Mauritius. We were longing for the sun, beautiful beaches and an adventure and decided to visit this paradise-like island we had heard so much about. What a wonderful experience it was …. I had read a lot of articles about the island in the Indian Ocean and had seen a few tours with holiday-makers claiming that Mauritius is nothing more but a beach destination. To be honest, I wouldn’t mind spending all day every day on the beach, but it would drive my husband mad, as he needs some activities. So I was curious, and as I like to plan ahead, I did a lot of research and contacted internet users to make sure that I don’t miss any vital information. As you can probably imagine, the holidays were a tremendous success, and we have the fondest of memories of one of our favorite trips. We tried a lot of fantastic and free of charge activities, which I would like to introduce to you in this article.

The Black River Gorges National Park

Located in the South-West of the island, the biggest national park of Mauritius offers abundant, beautiful vegetation, ideal for walks and hikes among big trees and endemic plants, with spectacular views of the coast line and the islands interior. This activity is ideal for nature lovers and activity addicts alike. We especially enjoyed a refreshing bath in the river halfway through our hike. The walks through this natural paradise offer plenty of photo opportunities of the tropical flora and fauna alike. And to my surprise I had to learn that the forest with its variety of unusual species is one of the few indigenous forests in the world. Follow the bird song and with a bit of luck you will be able to spot the Mauritian kestrel or the Mauritian cardinal and find yourself eye to eye with monkeys or fruit bats.

The Rochester Falls

In the South of Mauritius, you will find the easily accessible water falls of Rochester falls. The water cascades down from a height of about 10 m into a clear, fresh water rock pool, ideal for a refreshing bath. We loved to explore the less touristy surroundings and beautiful landscapes before climbing up the rock wall to jump off the cliff into the water below. The rock is quite extraordinary, as its unusual shapes are a result of centuries of erosion on basalt rock.

To access the falls, follow the road from Souillac toward Surinam, and then take the indicated dirt road through the sugar cane fields. After about 1 km, you will be able to hear the falls. The basin is surrounded by Mauritian children who show off their acrobatic skills and add to the original flair of this spectacular attraction off the beaten track.

The high plains of Grand Bassin

Mauritius is a country of many cultures that has developed through the arrival of different peoples. Hence you will find a variety of typical cultural sites which I recommend you visit to better understand the riches of this beautiful island.

The hindu temple of Grand Bassin, Ganga Talao (which means “lake  of Ganges”) is built on a natural crater lake on the high plains of the Savanne area. During the festival of Maha Shivaratri in February each year, the devotees of hindu faith go on a pilgrimage to the lake to honour the Lord Shiva. The colours of the landscape, the lavish arrangements of the offerings and the fascinating hindu culture made for an unforgettable outing.

The village of Chamarel

To change the culture, we wanted to discover a typical Creole village and returned to the South-West region of the island again, after having already visited the Black River Gorges National Park. We found amazing, picturesque landscapes. The 7 coloured earth at Chamarel is an absolute must-see, and a visit to the neighbouring village had us surrounded by laughing children, who played football in the roads. Mauritians are very friendly and welcoming, and especially adore children, so you will quickly be surrounded by curious villagers who try to engage you in a conversation. Surprisingly, a coffee plantation which we unfortunately did not have the time to explore this time can be found in this area – it will be on our to-do list for our next visit to Mauritius.

eureka property mauritius

House Euréka in Moka

As Mauritius was visited by numerous colonialists, we wanted to learn more about how Mauritians lived in previous centuries. House Eureka is an impressive colonial manor house with 109 doors, opening up to a travel in time.

This list of activities is certainly not complete, there are so many more things to do and to see, such as a hike up Le Morne, one of the first historic sites in Mauritius and classified as a  Unesco World Heritage site, take your masks and snorkels and discover the colourful marine flora and fauna in the lagoons around the island. Open up to this island full of surprises and make some life-long memories.

For those who are interested in visiting the island, I recommend the rental of a villa. We had found a beautiful villa in the South-West of Mauritius through the agency Oazure Villa Mauritius. The free-standing villa had a swimming pool, and right from the start, our hostess gave us great advice regarding activities and services.

So what is your favourite free of charge natural attraction in Mauritius?

Discover the islands around Mauritius

Hop aboard a catamaran, families, couples or friends. Then let the crew take care of everything for maximum comfort. According to the chosen destination, the program is different. For example, if you want to visit the North of Mauritius: Coin de Mire, Flat Island and Ilot Gabriel, you can enjoy a small navigation morning, if you’re lucky according to season , dolphins will even accompany you for a few minutes: an incredible experience for the lucky ones. Once on one of the islands, you will discover a paradise of turquoise waters and white sand islands where nature lives in its most wild.

A catamaran day is also exploring lively seabed by a multitude of fish and coral in bright colors. Long unavailable snorkeling sessions without a boat to take you there will be proposed. Diving into turquoise water and enjoy the beauty of the seabed punctuated by the coming and going of benches of the most beaufiul fish and sea turtles. A very emotional experience!

Mauritian culinary delights, discover the seabed, visits islands and uninhabited islets and protected, that’s what you proposes a catamaran in Mauritius.

Swim with dolphins

A dream to fulfill? If you want to push even further the experience, some fishing trips in the south west of Mauritius (Flic en Flac Tamarin) offer you to go to meet dolphins and swim with them. An exciting experience! Swim in the middle of hundreds of dolphins.

Some tips before going to sea

If you want to go to sea you will find in all the major coastal cities of the island are companies that will offer catamaran sailing. In high season we advise you to plan ahead and release your book at least 2 weeks in advance. In low season a week or a few days will suffice.

Before planning your day at sea we invite you to check with the company you choose, to know what a day will offer the most favorable conditions for your catamaran: sunny, little wind and calm sea conditions are ideal.

For those who do not have sea legs you should know that the catamarans are relatively stable due to their two hulls and therefore they hardly make you sick. For more sensitive, there are pills against seasickness.

Do not forget to moisturize and protect yourself from the sun because the reflection of the rays on the water can badly burn your skin if you are not protected.

If the catamaran is not the boat that makes you dream, some tour operators offer alternatives: motor boat, speed boat for the more keen on speed and traditional canoe with acoustic guitar for the dreamer … Let’s choose your ship for a day on the waters off Mauritius, to discover breathtaking scenery.

Wellness holiday in a villa in Mauritius

Mauritius is the ideal place for a wellness holiday in a villa : luxurious vegetation, breathtaking landscapes, white, sandy beaches …. These are all the ingredients to create the calming and relaxing atmosphere of a wellness holiday.

We don’t even have to think twice, this is THE wellness destination we would recommend. In addition, the choice of villas is particularly suitable if you are looking for a holiday destination with relaxation, comfort and wellness in mind.

Why would a stay in a villa be particularly beneficial when it comes to wellness?
A stay in a holiday villa offers a few advantages which can transform your holidays into a real break from day-to-day life, thus allowing you to unwind completely and recharge your batteries. The rental of a great number of villas in Mauritius will give you access to a variety of services, some of them included in the rent, all of them aiming at making your stay an oasis of relaxation.

For example, you have the possibility to hire a personal trainer who will come to the villa for your fitness, martial arts, yoga or meditation classes.

Furthermore, you can book relaxing massages and beauty treatments at the villa. We can also recommend benefiting from the preferential rates some of the villa rental agencies offer at the surrounding hotels, allowing you access to the hotel spa, hamman, golf courses etc.

Enjoy the beauty of Mauritius in the close proximity of your villa
It is not necessary to drive a long way to find a relaxing place outside of your villa. You will generally just have to leave the house in order to find yourself surrounded by extraordinary nature. A lot of the villas are located on private beaches, where you can just unwind under a shady casuarina tree, enjoy the breeze and listen to the  rustle in the leaves of the palm trees while sipping on the juice of a freshly cut coconut.
And what could be more relaxing than sailing out to sea? The rental of a villa in Mauritius most of the times gives you access to a half-day a day-long boat rental with a skipper, who will take you to the most unspoiled, magnificent parts of the lagoons, allowing you to explore the marine life of the clear, turquoise waters.
If you prefer to stay on terra firma, you will be able to find a variety of fantastic hikes through the Gorges of Black River, or hire a guide and walk up the mountain “Le Pouce” with its breathtaking views from coast to coast. Surrounded by the beauty of nature, you will be able to unwind and replenish your energy levels.

In short, a villa rental in Mauritius is the ideal holiday solution for you if you are planning to dedicate your holidays to wellness. Holiday accommodation – a few tips on how to travel lightly with toddler

travel with toddler

A family holiday is a fantastic project, which can however become a real nightmare if you are travelling with one or more babies.

Before you start the often tedious and time-consuming preparations of your trip, aim to find a suitable solution for your holiday accommodation, which corresponds to the number of persons travelling and to their ages. If you are travelling with a baby, some accommodations are not to be recommended, such as staying with a local or in a guest house, while others such as renting a house, an apartment or a villa are more suitable than a hotel stay.

To choose the right kind of accommodation means to maintain the usual routine for your baby. A hotel stay might be disruptive due to different meal times and other schedules. If you are renting your own holiday home you and your baby’s routine stay the same.

Although we would recommend this kind of accommodation for your holidays, we would however draw your attention to the fact that you need to check the available facilities at your holiday home in order to avoid any bad surprises upon your arrival. Make sure to use a reputable agency that is specialized in the rental of holiday homes instead of renting directly from the home owner, who will try to rent his property at all costs without paying attention to your specific requirements. An agency that is specialized in the rental of holiday accommodation will be able to guide you in your decision making process. Some agency offer tailor-made services which will add a considerable amount of comfort during your holidays when it comes to managing your baby: babysitter, kids club, in-house chef, all-inclusive packages, grocery deliveries before your arrival based on a shopping list that you have completed before your trip etc. If all these services are available for your family’s arrival, make sure that the necessary baby equipment is also available: baby cot, high chair, changing table, bottle warmer etc. In general, you will be able to rent the equipment in addition to your holiday home.

If you are requested to pay an additional amount for the rental of this equipment, just bear in mind that it is much easier to rent everything at your destination rather than bringing it all with you in an additional suitcase (and risk paying surcharges for exceeding your luggage allowance).

Once you have chosen your holiday accommodation, all you have to do is pack your bags. When choosing your clothes and those of your baby, bear in mind that most holiday homes come with a washing machine. To transport your baby, rather opt for a baby carrier than a pushchair (which you can rent on site, if needed).
